Discover Koreana Japanese Restaurant

Walking into Koreana Japanese Restaurant feels like stumbling on a local secret that everyone somehow already knows. Tucked into 207 W Water St, Decorah, IA 52101, United States, this spot blends the laid-back comfort of a neighborhood diner with the precision you expect from a serious Japanese kitchen. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, sometimes grabbing a quick lunch between errands, other times settling in for a slow dinner where the conversation stretches as long as the menu does.

The menu itself is a thoughtful mix of familiar Japanese favorites and Korean-influenced comfort food, which makes sense once you realize how much crossover there is in techniques and flavors. You’ll see sushi rolls sitting comfortably next to bulgogi and hearty noodle bowls. One thing I appreciate is the consistency. Whether it’s a simple chicken teriyaki or a more complex bibimbap, the flavors hit the same reliable notes every time. That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by accident; it comes from tight kitchen processes, proper prep, and cooks who actually follow recipes instead of winging it.

From a food safety and quality standpoint, the kitchen seems to take things seriously. According to USDA guidelines, poultry should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F to be considered safe, and the chicken dishes here always arrive juicy without any hint of undercooking. That balance between safety and texture is something culinary schools drill into students, and it shows. Organizations like the James Beard Foundation often emphasize technique and discipline over flash, and this place quietly embodies that mindset.

One afternoon, I watched a server explain the difference between sashimi and sushi to a first-time guest, breaking it down without a hint of condescension. That kind of service matters. It builds trust, especially for diners who might be new to Japanese cuisine. Reviews around town echo the same theme: friendly staff, patient explanations, and food that tastes like it was made with care. It’s the sort of place locals recommend with confidence, not hype.

The dining room isn’t trying to be trendy. Instead, it leans into a clean, casual vibe that makes it easy to relax. Families, college students, and older couples all seem equally at home here. I’ve overheard more than one person call it a hidden gem, and while that phrase gets tossed around a lot, it fits. Another regular once described the spicy ramen as a customer favorite, and judging by how often it gets ordered, that checks out.

Japanese restaurants live or die by ingredient handling, especially when raw fish is involved. The National Fisheries Institute notes that proper cold storage and fast turnover are key to maintaining quality, and the sushi here reflects that standard. The fish tastes clean, the rice is properly seasoned, and the balance doesn’t get lost under heavy sauces. It’s approachable without being bland, which is harder to pull off than people think.

There are some limitations worth mentioning. The restaurant isn’t huge, so during peak dinner hours you might wait a bit, and the menu doesn’t rotate seasonally as much as larger urban spots do. Still, for a town the size of Decorah, having a Japanese restaurant that delivers this level of reliability is impressive. The locations may be limited to this single address, but the reputation travels well beyond it.

If you’re scrolling through reviews trying to decide where to eat, this is one of those places where the praise lines up with reality. The food, the service, and the atmosphere all work together, making Koreana Japanese Restaurant feel less like a special occasion spot and more like a dependable favorite you keep coming back to, meal after meal.

  • The food was pretty good, definitely comparable to what you'd get at a nice restaurant of the same style. The sushi was definitely in the better end of the spectrum. Service was very polite, helpful, and swiftly accommodated every request. It's easy to tell they are experienced. My order was as follows; monkey brains, Heart attack, beef & broccoli, shrimp lo mein, and the Oh My God Roll.

  • First, let me start by saying the service is AMAZING. Even during a busy lunch rush, we never felt ignored or like anything was taking too long. The crab rangoon and gyozas were excellent, and the chicken fried rice was incredible. We ordered two rolls and neither was particularly knock-your-socks-off, but it may just come down to personal taste. Overall, a pleasant experience.

  • Ok. Hear me out. The bathroom is a whole vibe! “Immaculate Vibe” “great for a bathroom selfie”- per my 11 year old Mood music, a bidet (once you figure out ;), nice air freshener. 10 out of 10 see picture! The sushi was beautiful and tasty. Good beef dish

  • The food was amazing! The staff was so kind and caring! We ordered the lunch special and my 2 year old daughter was eating with me, she was loving the soup, the staff had noticed and came back with an extra bowl of soup just for her. Will definitely be going back!

  • Even though grocery prices in the U.S. have skyrocketed lately, eating out still feels reasonably priced — especially for us Norwegians. Koreana is a Japanese/Korean restaurant in Decorah offering both sushi and more traditional Asian dishes. Sushi sounded best that day, so I went for a lunch combo with maki rolls: one with tempura shrimp and one with “crab meat” (which is really crabsticks, of course). The tempura shrimp maki was excellent — crisp, flavorful, and well balanced. The crabstick rolls were more average, perfectly fine but nothing memorable. A small but important bonus: they serve Pepsi, which is surprisingly rare in U.S. restaurants — and the soda had no chlorine taste, which is even rarer. Price before tip: $22, very fair for what you get. Overall, a tasty, satisfying lunch and a solid choice in Decorah. A confident 4/5.

  • We've been to Koreana a couple times now and I've already decided it's my favorite restaurant. They have so many amazing options to choose from. My only request for my birthday today was to go to Koreana. Their sushi is extremely delicious and the atmosphere is wonderful.
